High Ability Program

To engage, challenge and support gifted students and learners
ready to go beyond general education

A High Ability student is one who performs at or shows the potential for an outstanding level of accomplishment in at least one academic area when compared to others of the same age, experience or environment. A High Ability student is also characterized by exceptional gifts, talents or motivation.

One thing that sets our program apart from other H.A. or "gifted and talented" programs is its daily duration. Our curriculum is designed to engage High Ability learners in all core subjects for the entire school day! Other benefits include:

  • Challenging curriculum
  • Uniquely qualified staff (most teachers certified in H.A. education)
  • Ongoing staff professional development
  • Dedicated classrooms of learners
  • Weekly lessons focused on social-emotional needs
  • Free busing for all H.A. students along with their siblings if within MCS district boundaries
  • Integrated Arts and Music programs
  • Extra-curricular activities

Emily Skoglund - Parent of High Ability student

“Our daughter loves the High Ability Program at EWA. I can tell she is excited to learn and share what she's learning. She has been challenged but also receives plenty of support. It's been amazing to see how much she has grown academically in just a couple of years. The communication between the school and parents has been a great help to us in supporting her learning.”
                                                                                                                                                                     - Emily Skoglund, parent

The Holowell family

“The High Ability program has been a great learning environment for our children. The teachers have built a culture among the students of celebrating one another and of enjoying the learning process. Our children want to go to school and want to keep learning when they come home, and that will go a long way in developing a lifelong joy of learning and discovery. “
                                                                                                                                          - Josh and Whitney Holowell, parents

The Zolman family

"Our children have flourished in Muncie Community Schools' High Ability Program. This program combines smaller class sizes with exceptional teachers trained to work with High Ability learners and a district equipped to offer diverse experiences and opportunities throughout your child's primary and secondary schooling."
